Sterecycle boss tells of sadness for blast victim

THE boss of a recycling plant today paid tribute to a worker who died following an explosion.

Sterecycle chief executive Tom Shields said that he was “deeply saddened” by the death of 42-year-old site operator Michael Whinfrey.

Mr Whinfrey died at Leeds General Hospital yesterday evening after being hurt in the blast at the Templebrough waste plant.

Another worker, 51-year-old Peter Lindon Davis, was being treated at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield today.

Mr Shields said: “I speak for all of my staff when I say how deeply saddened I am by Michael's death.”

The plant is still closed while an investigation takes place.
