Firefighters imposed a 100-metre cordon as a precaution after they were called to the Victrex plant, on Ginhouse Lane, Thornhill, at around 12.15am this morning..

A fire service spokesman said that six members of staff escaped unharmed and members of the public were not put at risk by the leak of highly corrosive boron triflouride.

He added: “Crews from Stocksbridge and Darnall joined a team from Rotherham at the incident and, ultimately, nobody came to any harm.”

Firefighters left the scene shortly before 3am.
