Stadium comes first for Millers

ROTHERHAM United are prepared to bide their time to develop a quality training ground to compliment the fantastic set-up at the New York Stadium.

The Millers acquired the 14-acre former Outokumpu site at Brinsworth in 2011 with a view to developing it as an Academy-standard base for all its players from junior to senior level.

The purchase occurred during the building of their new £20 million home on the former Guest and Chrimes site and the training ground project was sensibly put on the back burner.

Until the New York Stadium project is fully up and running and all energies can be put into the planning and finding the money for the ambitious project, the club says that is how it will remain, although it wants to utilise the site more in the meantime.

Chief operating officer Paul Douglas told the Advertiser: “There is a move these days to combine football and the Community Sports Trust and we see the value of extending this and that is a chance for us to do that at that site.

“As a Community Sports Trust, we are working closely with Rotherham Borough Council to develop in partnership with them.”

Until more concrete plans are brought to fruition at Outokumpu, the club is happy to continue with its temporary training base at the Roundwood at Parkgate.
