An ancient woodland has been given a new lease of life thanks to new information signs - replacing the ones stolen for scrap two years ago.

The glass-reinforced plastic boards welcome visitors and make up a self-guided trail through Canklow Woods.

They were designed to provide information about the long history and importance of the 83 hectares of striking scenery.

Cllr Gerald Smith, Rotherham Borough Council's cabinet member for Economic Development, Planning and Transport, was sure visitors would appreciate the replacement signage.

"The trail was particularly well-received and appreciated by many of the woodland's visitors when it was installed and so it was a considerable setback when the signs were stolen.

"We have worked hard to find a suitable replacement that will not attract thieves but will be a valuable guide to people who use and love these woods, which are sited on the doorstep of the town centre."
