School cleared in kitchen blaze scare

A SCHOOL was evacuated this morning when a kitchen cooker caught fire.

About 200 pupils and staff left the Sitwell Infant building while firefighters were called.

A cook managed to extinguish the blaze using a fire blanket but was taken to hospital with burnt hands.

Firefighters from Rotherham and Aston Park stations attended at 10.20am and a spokesman said that a spillage of oil at the back of the cooker had caused some insulation to catch fire.

Lessons resumed as normal shortly afterwards.
