Sam gets bin wagon boost

A LITTLE boy who is battling leukaemia was delighted to be among the first to get inside the borough council’s new fleet of bin wagons.

Three-year-old Sam Mylett, of Kimberworth, has a real passion for dustcarts and every Tuesday gets excited about watching the crews visiting his street.

The youngster has been fighting leukaemia since May 2008 and is currently undergoing treatment at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

And when his mum, Claire, wrote to Rotherham Borough Council to ask if he could visit the waste management unit as a treat, Sam was invited as a special guest to the unveiling of the new 20-strong fleet of purple and orange wagons.

Claire said: “He absolutely loved it. Everyone there made a huge fuss of him and he came away with a rucksack full of goodies – toy bin wagons, a badge with his name on and a luminous safety jacket and hat. And they put his name on the side of one of the wagons

“When he’s not in the hospital, he waves at the wagons on a Tuesday morning as they go past.”

Cllr Richard Russell welcomed Sam to the depot. He said: “I hope Sam enjoyed it and approves of our new fleet. It is a real delight to be able to do something that will bring a little light into his life.”
