Horrified Chris Walker was left "sick to the stomach" when she made a gruesome discovery on her daily walk—a bag full of dead rabbits.

Mrs Walker was walking her dog with a friend on the fringes of Sitwell Golf Course on Tuesday morning when they stumbled across two blue plastic bags on the edge of the footpath.

On closer inspection, the disgusted pair found that there were two "little bodies" next to the bag and up to 20 more inside.

"It was just the most horrific thing to find," said Mrs Walker, of East Bawtry Road. "They had just been ripped to pieces and chucked away, right next to the path.

"I felt sick to my stomach. We rang the RSPCA and they said that the best thing to do was to take the bag home with us. They have just come along to take it away."

Mrs Walker's unpleasant find came just days after she spotted a rabbit at a nearby spot apparently suffering from myxomatosis and had to be taken away by the RSPCA and put down.

A RSPCA spokeswoman said: "We have collected two supermarket carrier bags of dead rabbits from a member of the public who found them in a field close to Shrogswood Road in Rotherham around 8.15am on Tuesday.

"The bags contained a number of dead, wild rabbits some of which had had their innards torn out, possibly by dogs.

"We would be very keen to hear from anyone who has any information about this or saw or heard anything suspicious in the area prior to that time.

"Anyone who can help should call us on 0300 123 4999 and ask to leave a message for Chief Insp Matt Bell."
