Rotherham’s Spanish Civil War hero celebrated

TRADE unionists led a memorial event of Spanish Civil War fighter Tommy James.

Described as an “impromptu celebration”, it saw members of UNITE, UNISON, GMB, RMT, NUM, and ASLEF at Rotherham Peace Garden in St Ann’s.

Born in the Rotherham Workhouse, Mr James went on to become president of the Rotherham Trades Council, Community Party member and anti-fascist soldier in the Spanish conflict in the 1920s.

The service also commemorated other civil war soldiers Geoffrey Allstop, Joseph Maiden and Chris Smith.
