Rotherham volunteers prepare to march with pride

VOLUNTEERS will march proudly through the streets of Rotherham next week.

For the last few years, Voluntary Action Rotherham, with Rotherham Together Partnership and other groups from across the borough, have celebrated volunteering with a series of events every June.

The Big Walk is held in recognition of the town’s estimated 50,000 Rotherham volunteers, their efforts and contribution within the community.

This year’s walk begins at Rotherham Minster at 12.30pm on Tuesday, June 26, before heading out on a 45-minute stroll around the town centre and returning to the historic church for coffee and cake and speeches from police and council figures.

Kerry McGrath, volunteer training and development coordinator for VAR, said: “Many local organisations tell us that they would close tomorrow without volunteers.

“We are very proud of our volunteers in Rotherham and the contribution that they make.

“The walk is just one way that we can say thank you.”

The event is open to Rotherham volunteers and volunteer involving organisations and registration begins at noon.

“Whether you want to attend on your own, or with a group of colleagues, you will be very welcome,” said Kerry.

"This year’s attractions include, music from Rotherham Community Choirs and Sheffield Pipe Band, free goodie bags, a “selfie station”, a magician, a sign-up stand for new volunteers and a message book where people can pay tribute to volunteers.
