Rotherham mum's delight as court backs heart unit campaigners

A ROTHERHAM mum has welcomed a court decision which gives new hope to campaigners battling to save Yorkshire’s only dedicated child heart unit.

Cassie Symms, whose son Zander has been treated at the Leeds Infirmary unit, said she was delighted after a judge ruled that part of a public consultation carried out into the proposals was unlawful.

A judge will now decide what yesterday’s ruling means for the review process later this month, including the possible order of a fresh public consultation.

Cassie, from Dinnington, said the decision was “a massive, massive step in the right direction.”

The Save Our Surgery has been fighting to save the unit. If it closes,

hildren with serious heart conditions will have to travel to Birmingham, Liverpool or Newcastle for treatment.

Sir Neil McKay, chairman of the Joint Committee of Primary Care Trusts, which carried out the review, said he was “very disappointed” with the court’s decision.
