Rotherham litterbugs face stiffer fines

FIXED penalty fines for littering will rise to £80 from September

It brings the punishment up to the same level as for dog fouling, which increased by £30 at the start of the year.

But Rotherham Borough Council said that the number of notices handed out over the past three years had fallen. High visibility and targeted litter patrols are to increase in number during this financial year.

If offenders opt not to pay the fine, they face prosecution through the magistrates court and a maximum penalty of £2,500.
