Rotherham lags in SATs results

ROTHERHAM had the second lowest SATs results in Yorkshire this year, leaving the borough languishing eight places off the bottom of the national league table.

New figures show 68 per cent of 11-year-olds gained at least Level 4 in English and maths, compared with 73 in Barnsley, 72 in Doncaster and 70 in Sheffield.

By the end of Year 6, boys trail girls by 13 per cent in English and two per cent when it comes to numeracy.

Rotherham is ranked 13th of Yorkshire’s 15 authorities and 143rd of 151 local authorities nationally, new figures show.

But the picture is slowly improving—results have risen three per cent since 2007.

Rotherham’s senior schools director Dorothy Smith said: “These figures show that improvements are being made as we are closing the gap on the national and regional averages in English, reading and writing.

“However, we would obviously like to see those improvements moving at a faster rate.
