Rotherham Hospital praised for its care of old folk

INSPECTORS have praised Rotherham Hospital for treating older patients with dignity in a recent review.

A report by the Care Quality Commission declared that staff were “meeting all the essential standards of quality and safety inspected,” including nutrition and privacy.

Published on Tuesday morning, the document outlined the experiences of patients on hospital wards during the survey period last September.

Inspectors observed staff and asked patients to rate the standard of care their received, as well as marking staff on their bedside manner.

CQC chief executive David Behan said: “This is basic care and getting it right can transform a stressful experience for an older person into a supportive and caring one.

“Safe, good quality care is not complex or time-consuming,” he added. “Effective leadership and staff who feel supported make this happen every day. We want services to learn from the best.”

Of 50 hospitals surveyed by the CQC nationwide, only four fifths were found to be delivering the standard of dignity expected.
