Rotherham goes to the polls

POLLING stations have opened as voters are asked to choose who they want to fill 21 seats up for grabs at Town Hall.

Weeks of campaigning came to a close for the 72 candidates hoping to win a place on Rotherham Borough Council.

There are more than 193,000 electors across Rotherham, including almost 50,000 postal voters.

Last year’s highest turnout was 46.8 per cent at Sitwell, while Rawmarsh won the apathy award with just 33.5 of voters casting their choice.

Chief elections officer Mags Evers said: “For our team today is the culmination of months of hard work.

“We all want to go home satisfied that we’ve put on a fair, open and accurate election.”
