Rotherham Central in business after £8.5m transformation

The Secretary of State for Transport, who grew up in the town, will unveiled a plaque marking the opening of the £8.5 million station.

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, working with the Department for Transport, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, Network Rail and Northern, has carried out the redevelopment as part of the Rotherham Renaissance scheme.

The station features a distinctive new curving roof, there is new lighting, CCTV, a new waiting room, passenger information screens, a ticket office and retail kiosk.

Disabled access to the station, which has around half a million visitors each year, has also been improved with the introduction of a lift.

The station remained open during the works and the new facilities were opened to the public in February this year. Additional landscaping works are being carried out along the riverside down to Rotherham United's New York Stadium, due to open in the next few weeks.

Transport Secretary Justine Greening said: “The rebuilding of Rotherham's train station will deliver real benefits for passengers and the wider community. It will boost competitiveness, stimulate the local economy and showcase Rotherham as a vibrant town with many exciting opportunities for new businesses.”

David Young, SYPTE Director of Customer Experience, said: "We are delighted the Secretary of State has agreed to open the rebuilt station at Rotherham. It is certainly a vast improvement on what was there before and we are very pleased with the excellent feedback we have had from customers thus far."
