Rotherham bus station fire 'suspicious', say police

POLICE believe there are suspicious circumstances around last night’s fire at Rotherham Interchange.

Fire crews were called out at 10.50pm and the blaze spread from a bus to part of the station building.

It was initially thought to have been an accident but investigations are ongoing and police have appealed for witnesses.

Det Chief Insp Sarah Poolman, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “While we’re in the early stages of this investigation, at this time we do believe the fire is suspicious and as such we will be making further enquiries in the community in the coming days.

“There was some disruption this morning given the part-closure of the interchange building, so I am grateful for the public’s patience and understanding while we and our colleagues from South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue piece together the circumstances surrounding the fire.”

No-one was on the bus at the time of the fire. A section of the interchange was closed for enquiries to be carried out.

DCI Poolman said the force was keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and might have seen anything suspicious.
