An amateur photographer who dashed to the scene to record the remarkable sight on camera said that the ladle, used in steelmaking, had slid off the low loader as the driver swerved to avoid a speeding car.

Ann Rudd (65), of Hall Close Avenue, Whiston, said: “Me and my husband got there as quickly as we could and I couldn’t believe what I saw.

“I spoke to the driver and he said that he had swerved to avoid a speeding car after leaving the Stag roundabout and that had caused the ladle to slide off.

“Only part of the structure was on the road but it did look as though it had been damaged. There was a dent at its bottom corner.”

The lorry had been travelling towards Whiston when the incident occurred just a few yards after the Stag roundabout.

A police spokeswoman confirmed that a lorry had “broken down,” near its junction with Bentfield Avenue, after shedding its load.

She added: “The item is is currently blocking the carriageway.

“Police officers are on the scene but will have to wait for a crane to remove it.

“The road is expected to be closed for two to three hours.”
