Pupils given day off after blaze at school

FIREFIGHTERS battled to contain a blaze at a primary school after flames from a burning shed spread into a nearby classroom.

Pupils at The Hill Primary School, in Thurnscoe, were given the day off today (6) following the fire at around 11.20pm last night.

More than 20 firefighters were called to the blaze which had started in shed containing play equipment before spreading to the main school building.

A fire service spokesman said: “The fire had also penetrated the roof space and, on three or four occasions, broke through the roof.

“Firefighters contained the fire to the single classroom area, which has heavily damaged.

“Other parts of the school suffered smoke and water damage, while the shed, which contained play equipment, was completely destroyed.”

An investigation into the incident found the fire had been started deliberately.

Nobody was injured in the blaze, and fire crews were able to leave the scene at around 2.45am.
