Pub-goers’ tribute to Millers fan John Fearns

FRIENDS and pub regulars held a minute’s silence for Millers fan John Fearns after his death at the New York Stadium last weekend.

The Ring O’ Bells in Swinton fell silent on Monday night after landlord Ray Dawson and wife Sue decided to hold the tribute to remember their much loved customer, who had frequented the pub for more than 16 years.

Sue said the pub was busy and a lot of people were very upset, and some were only just finding out the sad news of Mr Fearns’ death after he fell ill outside Rotherham United’s ground last Saturday.

Sue described Mr Fearns as a very friendly and helpful gentleman.

She said he would meet friends at the pub before travelling to matches.

Swinton councillor Ken Wyatt said he knew John a little bit and their families had a slight connection through marriage.

He added: “John was a well-known and very popular person in the community and a passionate Rotherham United fan.

“I am sure his many friends will be very shocked at his sudden passing, but he clearly died at a place where he loved.”
