Prepayments certificates have also gone up, with a three-monthly certificate rising from £26.85 to £29.10.

The cost of a yearly certificate will not change and will remain at £104.

Even after the price has increased, a prepayment certificate will still save money for someone who needs more than four items in three months or 14 in one year.

Dental charges will also rise from today.

For a course of treatment begun on or after today, the charge for Band 1 will be £17, Band 2 will be £47 and Band 3 will be £204.
