Officers believe no-one was threatened with a weapon during the incident and said there was no suggestion of a firearm being used or anyone being injured.

A spokesman said: “Police take such reports very seriously. Local officers and specialist firearms officers responded quickly and enquiries are ongoing to trace the man alleged to be in possession of a firearm.

“Since the time of the incident, messages have been posted on Facebook speculating about this incident.

“Police would like to emphasise that reports of a shooting in the area are not true and there is no suggestion that this man poses a threat to the general public.”
