Police arrest nine after Broom riot

POLICE have made nine arrests since violence flared on the streets of the Broom Valley last week.

Officers rounded up suspects aged between 14 and 46 on suspicion of affray following the incident which unfolded on Lillian Street, Tooker Road and Gerard Road in the early hours of last Tuesday.

A police spokeswoman said: “All suspects have been released on bail pending further enquiries.”

Police worked to disperse crowds between midnight and 2.30am after what Chief Supt Jason Harwin described as “an ongoing dispute between two families”.

Mounted police and the force’s helicopter were deployed as part of an increased police presence in the area, near Wellgate, in the days that followed the flair-up.

Anyone with information about the disorder on Lillian Street, Tooker Road and Gerard Road should contact the police on 101, quoting incident number 37 of August 20.
