Police appeal for tolerance over youngsters

FED-UP residents have been told to be “tolerant” about the behaviour of youngsters which has prompted a flood of calls to the police.

Residents says they are  constantly having to report the youths because of their offensive language, littering and skateboarding at the shopping arcade in Woodlaithes village.

But Sgt Bill Bell, of Rawmarsh Police, has asked residents to be more tolerant.

He said: “This is a problem that has been brought to our attention and we have worked with the schools to get the young people to show respect for the estate and I believe our efforts have been pretty successful.

“On the whole these are good kids who live on the estate and the gardens outside the Co-op supermarket have formed a natural meeting place for them.

“As far as we’re aware, there are no problems with underage drinking and the main problems that remain relate to cycling on pavements and skateboarding.

“We do take residents’ concerns seriously but, where possible, we’d urge them to exercise a degree of tolerance.”

The issues surrounding groups of youths congregating on the streets of Woodlaithes Village has been discussed at Partners and Communities Together (PACT) meetings, area assemblies and Dalton Parish Council meetings in recent months.
