Police appeal after abuse ordeal of girl (5)

AN appeal for information has been launched by police after a “torrent of abuse” was allegedly hurled at a five-year-old girl at a train station.

Officers from the British Transport Police were called to Rotherham Train Station at around 4pm on March 26 following reports that the youngster had been verbally abused and struck by a woman while standing on the station’s platform.

A 24-year-old woman from Mexborough was arrested after the incident but later bailed to allow detectives to carry out further investigations.

Transport police are now examining CCTV footage of the station from the time of the incident.

Speaking of the alleged abuse of the youngster, who is also from Mexborough, Det Con Andy Lehman, of the transport police's Criminal Investigation Department said: “The person responsible launched an aggressive torrent of abuse on a defenceless child who was unable to help herself.

“This was a cowardly attack and I would appeal for anyone who was at the station at the time to come forward and help police with their enquiries urgently.”

Anyone with information should contact the British Transport Police on 0800 405 040, quoting background reference B7/NEA of 06/04/2011.
