Plea for walkers to help mark MacMillan milestone

A CANCER support charity celebrating its 100th birthday is calling for the people of Rotherham to help commemorate the milestone.

Macmillan staff and supporters will mark the centenary year with a wide variety of fund-raisers in a bid to boost awareness about the charity’s plight.

The fund-raising team is hoping to sign up volunteers now for this year’s coastal walk from Scarborough to Whitby on May 14.

Amy Hebdon, fund-raising manager for Rotherham, said: “This walk is a 21-mile challenge and will take around eight to nine hours to complete.

“The terrain of the walk is generally flat but slightly undulating in parts.

“There are three steep climbs between Robin Hood's Bay and Scarborough.

“This walk is fully managed and supported with three check points. On arrival to Scarborough, a coach trip will take you back to the car park in Whitby where you will enjoy well deserved fish and chips.”

There is a registration fee of £15 and a minimum sponsorship amount of a further £100—which could fund a Macmillan nurse for four hours.

Registration funds go towards the cost of providing transport, food and drink for the walk.

The sponsorship money then goes to Macmillan Cancer Support to help those affected by cancer.
