THE funeral of a man who fell 30 feet while working near the bottom of Rotherham's last remaining pit is to take place on Friday in his home village.

The service for Jackie Fisher (52), who died at Maltby pit last week, will take place at 10.45am at St John's Church in Edlington.

Emergency crews and a specialist mines and rescue team were sent at around 5pm last Monday to the pit in Maltby where Mr Fisher was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 52-year-old who was married, started his working life at the Yorkshire Main pit in 1972 but left in 1985, and had been working at Maltby ever since.

His death is currently being investigated by the Health and Safety Executive and police.

Mr Fisher's family issued a statement this week, saying: "We as a family and members of the mining community of Edlington remain deeply traumatised by the events surrounding the death of our father, son, husband and wish that the media continue to respect our privacy and allow us to grieve in peace at this tragic time.

"We thank those in our family and within the mining communities of Maltby and Edlington for their continued support."
