The officer lost just three games out of the 67 he played at the annual event held in Great Yarmouth over the spring bank holiday weekend and scooped the men’s, veteran’s and team titles, as well as being a silver medal in the doubles.

Ernie started playing table tennis in Zambia when he was 15 but took an eight year break from the sport after moving to the UK in 2002.

Since then he has won a string of titles and his most recent straight sets victory over Harry Sellies of the Netherlands adds to his impressive list of successes.

Ernie said: “I have been close to winning in each of the seven years I have entered the competition and to go one better and win the tournament is a real achievement. Representing Great Britain is both an honour and a pleasure.

“I really enjoyed this year’s tournament and it was great to be part of the winning GB police table tennis team.

“I’m already looking forward to defending my titles in Germany next year.”
