Eye-witness Mick Marshall said: “I was walking my dog up Little Common Lane in Kimberworth when I heard the school fire alarm.

“I thought it was unusual, then a loud boom followed.

“I thought a car may have crashed but then I saw smoke and flames coming out of the school.

“The fire brigade came about three minutes later – the school's evacuation onto the adjoining tennis courts worked well and the fire brigade’s response was impressive.”

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said the fire was believed to be accidental.

The school has been contacted for a comment.
