Pensioner killed in head-on smash

A PENSIONER died after a head-on crash in Mexborough on Sunday morning.

The 72-year-old man, from Conisbrough, was pronounced dead on arrival after being airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary.

He was driving along Doncaster Road when his green Toyota Corolla collided with a white Vauxhall Corsa and a black Audi A4 travelling towards Denaby Main at around 10.20am.

Three men in the Audi were injured. A 34-year-old passenger suffered serious spinal injuries and was taken to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital. 

The driver was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary with abdominal injuries and an 18-year-old passenger was also hurt. 

The driver - a 31-year-old man - has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to provide a specimen and driving while unfit through drink and drugs.

A 41-year-old Mexborough man driving the Corsa suffered slight injuries.
