Peace deal ends Rawmarsh Community School strikes

TEACHERS at strike-hit Rawmarsh Community School have suspended further action after the threat of redundancy hanging over one member of staff was lifted.

They will now meet to discuss a recommendation to withdraw any future action.

Ralph Dyson, the National Union of Teachers rep at the school, had been the only NUT teacher still facing compulsory redundancy.

But he was offered a part-time contract for the next academic year after an agreement was reached last Friday and his colleagues agreed to suspend strikes due to be held this week.

Mr Dyson had led 11 days of strikes aimed at lifting the threat to 25 teaching jobs, which were among 34 jobs threatened with the axe under proposals to tackle a budget deficit of up to £1.3 million.

NUT divisional secretary John Dalton said that while some teachers were not working a full week and there were some issues still to be resolved the result had been a victory for the NUT, for common sense and for the children’s future education.

Dr Wilson said: “We are pleased that the union has suspended its action this week as the school has been working hard to ensure that the changes we need to make do not have a negative impact on our students.
