Mark's big moment came after he won the Rotherham's Big Talent night, pocketing the £500 first prize, at the  the Corn Law Rhymer pub in Rotherham town centre.

He tipped off a couple of mates about what he might do if he won, but the proposal came out of the blue for fiancee Pariya.

“He had talked before about proposing but he never said where or when,” said a delighted Pariya (19), who had watched Mark perform from the front row of the packed crowd.

“I was shocked and amazed when he did it and everybody cheered when I said yes.

“It took me by surprise, but I loved it.”

Proud Mark, who impressed judges with his versions of Tom Jones’ hit I, Who Have Nothing and Breathe Easy by boy band Blue, said:  “I had a big speech prepared but when it came to it I got really nervous and couldn’t get it all out.

“I just said: ‘I’ve loved you since I first saw you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?’

“Pariya had tears in her eyes and could not speak so she just nodded yes and came up and gave me a hug.

“I wanted to make a night of it when I proposed and make it something special.

“It was a really good night.”

The couple have been together for almost two years and have recently moved into a house in Selborne Street, Eastwood.

While Pariya is due to start work at the Corn Law Rhymer this weekend, Mark currently works as a mobile karaoke DJ but has hopes of pursuing a singing career full-time.

“I’m going to go for The X Factor next year,” he said.

“I go to the Corn Law Rhymer every week and it was Karen from the pub that made me enter the competition.”
