KIND-HEARTED paper boy Harrison Crane helped spread festive cheer by handwriting no fewer than 240 Christmas cards - one for each home on his round.

Harrison (14), of Newman Road in Broom, penned the festive notes in between school, after-school sessions and fundraising for cancer charities.

His cards prompted reader Pete Jackson to contact the Advertiser to express his gratitude.

Mr Jackson, of Grange Road, Broom, said: “I would like to thank Harrison for his kind gesture.

“It was very heart-warming to think that he had taken the time to write all those cards so as to extend his festive wishes to every household on his round.

“Please extend our festive cheer to Harrison and wish him all the very best. I’m sure with his attitude he will go far in life.”

Mum Claire described Harrison as “a very hard-working young man”.

The teenager said: “I heard that a lot of people don’t see their families over the holidays, so I just wanted to spread a little Christmas joy.

“I enjoy the paper round, it’s good fun. It lets you earn your own money and save up for the things you want.”

Each month, Harrison spends half of his earnings and saves the other half.

Dad John said: “Harrison will often stop and chat with people on his paper round, sometimes for ten minutes.

“There’s one lady he always talks to, then he gives the paper to her dog and it takes it back to her.”

The tireless teenager has also raised hundreds of pounds for cancer charities.

He recently hosted two tea parties - one generated £200 for national charity Macmillan Cancer Support, the other £700 for Rotherham’s own Maples Cancer Care.

John added: “Harrison has always been a generous lad - he’d give his last pound to a stranger, if they needed it more.”

The peppy paper boy said he also hoped to complete the gruelling Tough Mudder obstacle course for charity, one day.

Maples' service manager Angela Bintcliffe said: “Harrison did an amazing job in raising much needed funds for the centre.

“We rely heavily on support from the local community and really appreciate people’s time and effort to help us to continue supporting local people affected by cancer.

“Well done and a huge thank you to Harrison and his family from the trustees, staff and volunteers at the centre.”
