Mr Hughes is co-ordinating policing of the visit on behalf of the Association of Chief Police Officers and will also take charge of security for the 2012 Olympics.

The Pope is visiting Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Birmingham during the trip, which makes him the first Pope to visit the UK since John Paul II in 1982.

Mr Hughes said that the Metropolitan Police’s specialist public protection unit would be in charge of protecting the Pope during the visit and that armed officers would be deployed.

Protests will be allowed at civic events but not at religious ceremonies, he added.
