Now, the furious residents in Thurcroft are banding together following claims that the man dragged his unwanted Staffordshire Bull Terrier through the streets boasting that he was taking it to the remote spot to kill it.

But, according to witnesses, it was not until he returned to the village covered in blood that shocked members of the community feared that he had carried out his threats in horrific style.

Meg Murray scoured the village’s pit tip in search of the dog and made the grizzly discovery.

“Everyone knew about what had happened and the police were called but they couldn’t make a case without the dog,” said Meg.

“Some other villagers and me took it upon ourselves to find it and we searched the pit tip until we were pointed in the right direction.

“When we found the dog you could see that he had tied it to a tree and attacked it with a spade.

“You can see where he missed and hit the tree and there was blood splattered all over. It was a horrible sight. The Staffy only looked about eight months old.”

Mrs Murray contacted the RSPCA and the police and the Advertiser understands that investigations into the incident are now underway.

Meanwhile, more than 150 people have joined an on-line campaign called “we hate dog killers” on the social networking web-site, Facebook, after being moved to action by the dog’s violent death.

Members of the group have branded the alleged killer an “evil sicko.”

Among a number of emotional messages on the site is one which says: “I can’t believe someone would do this to a dog. It’s so sick.”

The RSPCA were unable to comment on their ongoing investigation this week but a spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police sought to reassure residents.

She said: “They are understandably shocked and distressed by what has allegedly happened and officers from the local Safer Neighbourhood Team have been out in the community offering reassurance and advice.

“Any residents concerned about anti-social behaviour can report it to Rother Valley West Safer Neighbourhood Team on 01709 832280.”
