New taxi ranks for Rotherham town centre

EXTRA taxi ranks are to be provided in Rotherham town centre after a request from drivers and bar owners.

The new hackney carriage ranks will be in front of the Corn Law Rhymer pub in High Street and will cost Rotherham Council £3,500.

A report to the countncil says the move will improve road safety as cabs trawling for kerb space are obstructing the road.

An experimental 18-month traffic order will be made permanent if no problems occur or objections are received.

South Yorkshire Police have offered their support for the proposal. The existing rank in front of the Imperial buildings will be suspended

Plans for another rank on The Crofts were ditched because the road is too narrow.
