Tony Chapman (42), of Lindley Street, Eastwood, was found guilty on two counts of rape at Sheffield Crown Court today (Thursday) by a majority verdict of ten to two following a trial lasting almost two weeks.

A jury of eight women and four men deliberated for 15 hours and 29 minutes before reaching its verdict.

Chapman was found guilty yesterday (Wednesday) of another rape on a majority verdict.

Both of the women complainants were teenagers at the time of the alleged offences — Chapman was around 20 years older.

On Tuesday, the jury found Chapman guilty of actual bodily harm and making threats to kill.

Chapman has been remanded into custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court tomorrow when Judge David Dixon will deliver his sentence.

Remanding Chapman into custody, he told him: “You will be serving a significant sentence which you will start now.”

An NSPCC spokeswoman said afterwards: “Chapman probably thought that he would never have to face the consequences of his sickening crimes, believing that the bullying and violence to which he subjected his victims would ensure he would never be brought to justice.

“But as a result of their bravery in coming forward, their attacker is behind bars.

“We hope today’s verdict brings Chapman’s victims some form of closure and that they now receive all the support they need to move forward.

“Victims must be able to speak out about abuse they have suffered, confident that they will be listened to and justice served. We hope that the outcome of this case reinforces that message.”
