Multi-vehicle pile-up closes M1

MOTORISTS on the M1 were facing severe delays today after an accident involving a lorry and several cars.

The vehicles collided on the southbound carriageway between junction 31 for the A57 to Sheffield and junction 30, police said.

One of the cars caught fire and the lorry went into a ditch.

The motorway was  closed southbound between the two junctions, but one lane re-opened leaving traffic queuing.

Traffic is being diverted via the A57 towards Worksop and the A619.
