MP backs elimination of violence day

TODAY’S International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women has been backed by Rotherham MP Sarah Champion.

The shadow minister for preventing violence is supporting the UN event, which aims to combat violence against women and girls.

She said: “One in three women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual violence, mostly by an intimate partner.

“This is a shocking statistic, and reinforces the need to tackle violence against women and girls now.

“We need to prevent abuse in future generations, by ensuring that young people are equipped with the emotional tools that they need to enter into relationships with others.”

The day also marks the beginning of the 16 days of action against gender violence, which runs until International Human Rights Day on December 10.
