MP attacks 'remorseless' unemployment spike

ROTHERHAM MP Denis MacShane has called for new policies ahead of next week’s budget to staunch what he called: “the remorseless rise of unemployment in Rotherham.”

Figures released today show that in Rotherham 659 more people have been added to the unemployment register in the last year.

This puts the unemployment rate amongst the economically active population—those aged 16 to 64—of Rotherham at 10.7 per cent, way above the national average of 8.4 per cent.

“We have not begun to see the full impact of the Government cuts which will slash public sector employment which Rotherham depends upon,” Dr MacShane said.

“For every 13 workers who lose their jobs in the public sector, just one private sector job is being created.”
