Mosque's planned minaret 'out of place', say planners

Planners said the proposal for the mosque on Milton Road, Eastwood, would be inappropriate in the traditional terraced street.

The minaret would have been slightly taller than surrounding  chimneys and applicant Mohammed NajiB said it would define the function of the building and allow more light into the upstairs prayer hall.

The plan also included internal and external alterations with a disabled access ramp outside the mosque, which is made up of three converted terraced houses.

Rotherham Borough Council refused the application on the grounds that it would have a detrimental effect of appearance of the buildings and would be out of place in the street.

The planned access ramp would also create and obstruction to the detriment of road safety.
