The departing director said that he was looking forward to some relaxation.

He said: “I have had a fulfilling career, working with and for, five of the best chief executives in the NHS, four of whom went on to be knighted.

“But after 40 years in the NHS, I’ve earned a rest.

“At some stage, I will do some consultancy or locum work, but first I’ll take a break.”

Mr Brayford was born in the Dearne Valley and began his career at Barnsley Hospital in 1972 in the works department.

He moved to Doncaster in 1983 as deputy director of personnel and joined Doncaster Royal Infirmary in 1990 to work with David Nicholson, who is now the head of the NHS.

In 1991, Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Montagu Hospital became one of the first 57 trusts and Joe was appointed director of human resources.

A spokesman for Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals said: “Joe has been an exceptional and key member of the executive team.

“His expertise and outstanding knowledge in the HR field is second to none and he will be a hard act to follow.

“On behalf of the trust, we wish him all the best for the future.”
