Mexborough Market to be leased out by council

MANAGEMENT of Mexborough Market is set to be passed to a private operator, Doncaster Council has announced.

Cabinet members are expected to begin the process of finding a new operator on a 25-year lease next week.

Doncaster Market is also subject to the proposals, which are set to take effect from next March.

Cllr Joe Blackham, cabinet member for traded services, said: “Doncaster and Mexborough markets are important to us and we want to see them thrive and prosper.

“To ensure that this happens we need to make sure that both markets are highly competitive and fully embrace the changing customer shopping trends.”

Talks were being held with stallholders this week and the council said it wants to choose a bidder by the end of 2017.

Cllr Blackham said: “We realise that some traders in both Doncaster and Mexborough market might feel a bit uneasy about the changes we are proposing.

“We would like to reassure them that we have considered all the options and this is the one that we feel would secure the future of both markets and improve business activity going forward.”

The move is recommended for approval at Monday’s cabinet meeting.
