Mayor launches new community hub at Thorpe Hesley

TAI chi, baking and a buffet lunch were all on the menu as a new community base was launched.

The Aspire Community Hub held its first session at Thorpe Hesley last Monday and will run every Monday and Friday, providing activities and support for poeple over 18 with learning disabilities or mental health issues.

The Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Alan Buckley, performed the official opening at an event which also included representatives from Dearne Valley College, Rotherham United Football Club, Voluntary Action Rotherham, RotherFed, WEA, LFA TaiChi, In Good Taste Catering Services and Rotherham Borough Council.

The Aspire Community Hub will run on Mondays from 11am to 3pm (with £3.50 entry) and on Fridays from 11am to 1pm (£2) at the Trinity Community Centre, Sough Hall Avenue, Thorpe Hesley.

Sessions — including crafts, beauty, bowling and other games, tai chi and African drumming — aim to offer an alternative to adult day centres which are under threat and tackle social isolation.

Lynne Allan, chief executive of Aspire, said: “We as a community need to create opportunities for adults to have somewhere to have an activity hub they can come to with or without support.”

Aspire aims to support adults with learning disabilities or mental health issues to live independently in their own homes.
