RELEGATION moved a step closer for Rotherham United despite a battling display at fellow strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Andi Weimann’s goal in first-half stoppage time was enough to condemn the Millers to an 18th away league defeat, leaving them to rue first-half misses from Danny Ward. Lewis Price kept them in the game with a penalty save.

Leading scorer Ward was back in the starting line-up from injury and should have marked his return with two goals in the opening 22 minutes but failed to capitalise on one-on-ones with goalkeeper Carl Ikeme.

So nervy early on, Wolves survived those scares and also spurned a chance to go in front just after the half-hour. Helder Costa was brought down by Joe Mattock but Price did well to keep out the £13 million man’s spot kick.

Considering how well they’d competed, the Millers deserved to go into the break at least level but ended it trailing. For once they slipped their guard at the back and Weimann wriggled through and rounded Price to score.

The second half produced few chances. Jerry Yates came on to join Ward up front and put a glancing header just over the bar and although the Millers saw more of the ball, they were unable to get many clear sights of the home goal until another golden chance at the death when Semi Ajayi spooned over from close range.

Wolves were booed off at the final whistle while Rotherham warrated a draw. They still remain with only one away point this season and the gap to Championship safety has stretched to 21 points with nine games left.
