There will  definitely be NO “filth factory belching smoke and spewing out black bin filth” in the Dearne Valley.

Contrary to rumours, there will be NO nuclear waste or waste imported from Europe.

Whatever facility is built will use state of the art technology. It will operate to the very highest standards set by the Environment Agency and World Health Organisation and will be continuously monitored.

Any building will be architect-designed to fit in as far as possible with the surroundings.

Waste dealt with on the site will be leftover household waste—in other words the waste put in our black or grey bins, as well as a very small amount of office and shop waste. It will not be toxic, medical or agricultural waste.

Four waste specialist organisations have put forward different proposals, using a mix of different technologies. These are now being examined in great detail  and in December the four will be shortlisted to two. The preferred bidder will be announced next July.

The scheme will need to get planning permission before it can go ahead. At that stage, local people will be able to look at the detailed proposals and make their views known. The consultation will be very thorough and will be widely publicised through the BDR website, media, letters and notices closer to the time.

If planning permission is granted, construction is expected to take two-and-a-half years and the facility would open in 2014.

Between 200 and 300 jobs will be created during the construction period and between 40 and 80 permanent jobs, most of which will be filled by local people. Additional spin-off jobs are also expected to be created.
