Man who beat girlfriend in court

A MAN who beat up his girlfriend in front of her horrified young daughter has avoided jail.

Magistrates had told Darren Hancock (27) to expect a custodial sentence after he admitted assaulting Angela Welton.

Hancock, of Queen Street, Clifton, shoved her over a settee and caused bruising to her legs after an argument got out of hand.

He accepted that he started the July 20 incident at Miss Welton’s Eastwood home, and was sentenced at Rotherham Magistrates’ Court.

A two-year community order was given, with supervision requirements. Hancock must also pay £100 costs, £50 compensation and attend a domestic abuse programme.
