A MAN in his 60s had a lucky escape when he discovered a gas leak in his home in the early hours of the morning.

Firefighters were called to Oak Close, Sunnyside, at 1.10am this morning after the man woke up feeling groggy and could smell the potentially deadly fumes filling his home.

He managed to get out of the house and was taken to Rotherham General Hospital by paramedics.

A fire crew from Maltby ventilated the property before awaiting engineers from pipeline specialists Transco who repaired the leak.

A firefighter said: "It was very lucky that he woke up and smelled the gas when he did."
