Man cleared of woman's rape but found guilty of assault

A MAN has been cleared of raping a woman but found guilty of assaulting her.

Paul Adshead (46), of Wingfield, was convicted of two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm last Wednesday (15) at Sheffield Crown Court following a two-day trial.

He was acquitted of rape and assault by penetration.

Adshead was sentenced to nine months in prison.

Mr Gurdial Singh, prosecuting, told the jury Adshead was an alcoholic and, when drunk, would “use his fists”.

The complainant said Adshead had “backhanded” her two or three times in the mouth, which had caused her to bleed, during the assaults, which had occurred between June 26 and July 2 this year.
