Man (60) dies as car overturns in M1 pile-up

WITNESSES are being sought after a 60-year-old man died when his car was involved in a collision on the M1 southbound in Rotherham.

The collision happened at 5.44pm last night on the M1 southbound near junction 33 at Catcliffe.

A blue Fiat Stilo driven by a 24-year-old woman from Derby was travelling southbound on the M1 in lane three, when it is believed to have lost control and travelled into lane two colliding with a Mitsubishi Pajero 4x4, driven by a 60-year-man from Nottingham.

The Fiat crossed over the verge of the exit slip road, hitting with a sign post.

The Mitsubishi is then reported to have collided into the rear of a black VW Golf in the offside lane of the slip road before coming to rest upside down in the offside lane of the slip road.

Both drivers of the Mitsubishi and Golf were  trapped inside their cars.

The driver of the Golf was a 22-year-old woman from Sheffield.

The driver of the Mitsubishi suffered fatal injuries in the collision. A passenger in this vehicle, a 31-year-old man from Nottingham, suffered serious injuries to his hands and was taken to Rotherham Hospital for treatment.

The drivers of the Golf and Fiat did not suffer any serious injuries.

The M1 southbound was closed for several hours following the collision.
