Machete and knife found during Mexborough land search

Officers conducted the search around Schofield Street on Monday (4) as part of efforts to tackle crime and address community concerns.

The sweep was performed alongside stop-and-search procedures following a stabbing in the town last Thursday (31). A 25-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy have been charged over that incident which left a 22-year-old man injured.

Police used powers under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act to stop anyone they suspected of carrying weapons.

Det Chief Insp Paul Wilson, who oversaw the activity, said: “I understand the incident in Mexborough last week will have caused alarm and distress to the local community

“However, I would like to offer my reassurance that violent crime of any nature will not be tolerated and we will always take the necessary action to prevent this.”

He added: “Along with working to identify those responsible we have placed a number of other plans in place to further improve community safety and prevent crime.

“Our number one priority is the safety of everyone and we will continue to work with our partners and local communities to achieve this.”
